Ninja Scroll is an animated television series that is based on the animated Japanese film of the same name. The film was created by the Japanese writer and director Yoshiaki Kawajiri, who is notable for such films as Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust and Wicked City. But Japanese historical purists beware, this is not a piece of rigid historical fiction. It is, basically, a sword and sorcery epic. The story is simple, straight forward and feels timeless. Taking place fourteen years after the film, Ninja Scroll, it continues to follow the story of wandering vagabond and sellsword ninja, Kibagami Jubei. He is hired to protect a important priestess from a savage clan of warriors with the help of a shadowy monk and a thief. It should be noted that the show is extremely violent, and there are images of nudity.
